Welcome to

Saskatoon Painters Club

Our 2024 Art Show & Sale is coming up and we want to introduce some of our participating artists and their styles of art! We have 20 members and several drop-ins that attend and we have everything from realism to abstract styles and all sizes and price points.  Many of our artists do commissions as well, so if you are looking for a specific colour combination or theme of work, please let us know.

Everyone was asked these two questions:

What are your thoughts about the rewards and experiences about painting with a group of artists?

What have you learned about yourself through your art journey and/or what excites you about your process?

Ted Hansen

I discovered a love of art quite by chance over twenty years ago when the history class I intended to take at the U of S was full so I enrolled instead in a sculpture class taught by well known local artist Bill Epp. I have been active as an artist ever since. Although I had done some painting in acrylics at university, I had been working primarily as a sculptor in clay and bronze when I first joined Jean Williams’ Montgomery watercolour group. The other major influence in my painting career was Graham Flatt. I attended his watercolour workshops regularly for years and was continually impressed by the wealth of knowledge that he had to share.

I can't think of a better way to spend my time than creating original pieces of art. I especially enjoy the company of fellow painters, and treasure the inspiration that they have provided. At workshops, art retreats, and regular painting groups the atmosphere is always supportive and a whole lot of fun. I believe that I have been influenced by all the artists that I have come into contact with over the years. In the end, however, I have ended up developing a style that is recognizably my own. As a wise instructor once said to me....."style happens whether you want it to or not, so embrace that which is uniquely yours and relax & enjoy the journey.”

Drawing classes from: Cecilia Jergens and some UofS classes. Encaustic workshops from Kathy Bradshaw.

The Saskatoon Painters group provides me with inspiration, feedback , motivation and fun in  my art journey. I've learned that painting makes me happy and It is freeing. I get lost in my own world when I'm painting.

Painting and creating with the group is an immensely rewarding experience.  We continually  learn from, motivate,  and inspire each other. I think we get so much more done in a group than if we were working alone. I look forward to our painting get togethers with joy and delight.

In my lifelong art journey  I have learned that I absolutely  must paint what I love or it just doesn't work. When I get a vision of what I want to depict, I try to engage all my sensory abilities while painting- not only sight, but the sounds and smells, the temperature and feel of the air, the textures. If I create something beautiful in this process, it's so exciting to put those final touches of colour on!

I must enjoy group painting as I have been with the Saskatoon Painters Club for 25 years.  I appreciate the critics and the encouragement from fellow artists.  The experiences gained are many working as a team to provide a successful annual show and sale.  I have made many dear friends within this group.  I am very blessed!

I have ventured from pencil, charcoal, water colours and tiny brushes to acrylics, pallet knives and larger brushes.  I love using heavy mediums and a layering effect.  This process is so fun and has allowed me to paint large canvases.  Landscapes are the most inspiring and my favorite to paint.

Painting with a group of artists can give  many different opinions and options.

The opinions of the individuals in our group have helped me to look

for the positive in my work and the work of the other artists.

It has given me confidence in monetarily artistically evaluating my work.

An advantage to working in a group setting enables us to earn donations

for worthy causes in our community.

In my art journey I keep challenging myself in varied ways of adding texture to watercolor.

I also refer back to paintings done in the past (well executed and not well executed) and ask myself,

"Why did this painting succeed and why did this painting fail ?"

I keep journals of pieces of previous work where I liked the technique(s) I used.

Recently I  have enjoyed adding pen within a watercolor.

I find it both calming and exciting.

Evaluating my art process is an ongoing experience.

What are your thoughts about the rewards and experiences about painting with a group of artists?

Our group has a genuine fondness and passion for creativity,  expression of individual styles, and positive reinforcement!  Together, we find meaningful ways to support each other, and our communities. Tremendous accomplishments in working as a team, to discuss group challenges, and accomplish our goals..

Our fellowship and encouragement to evolve as artists  is prescious!

What have you learned about yourself through your art journey and/or what excites you about your process?

I have learned that if you must nurture your gifts!

I paint because I must!

Creativity is therapy...

Art gives me peace... purpose.

Painting with our group gives me fellowship... and the best way to develop my best self.

What excites me, is working together towards meaning goals... using Art as the means.

What delights me.. is how far we've come... how much I've learned. Much more to learn.

What excites me about the process of painting is that you never know what will come out. You put brush and paint on paper and some magic happens; you definitively cannot

predict everything.

Painting with a group of artists is very rewarding. You learn a lot by watching what the others are doing and how they are doing it. Different people have different skills and you are exposed to different approaches and methods. Other artists are always willing to help by suggesting a different process or asking you questions to make you think.

Interacting with artists is a learning experience and what comes your way is always surprising.

The painting journey with the Saskatoon Painters Club continues to be very strong and rewarding! There are many diverse skill sets throughout the group and I am grateful for the sharing of artist styles and tips! At the end of the day the continued support that we all provide each other is truly amazing and has enabled me to try many different mediums  and techniques!

I love to draw and paint people. Over the years I’ve found that I learn and perform better when I do these activities with other artists. I’m active in the Saturday MorningFigure Drawing Workshop. And I run the Long Pose Group which meets once a month to draw/paint from a model. As a drop-in member of the Saskatoon Painters Club, I get to participate in new learning activities and to share my own process and that of other artists, upping my game considerably.

I have taken many classes and workshops over the years. And am looking forward to an upcoming weekend workshop with David Langevin.

It’s a wonderful gift to work with a collaboration of artists. We are all different and have unique processes and when we share with one another is when the magic happens.

Inspiration can happen anywhere at anytime and being able to share that with like minded individuals is a beautiful thing.

Corla McGillivray

I find it so refreshing to work with this group of artists, everyone comes with a positive attitude and unique style of painting. There is such a vast range of experience that if I am ever needing a critique, there is always someone willing to look at a piece of my art with fresh eyes and offer suggestions.  As an artist, that is so helpful because sometimes we can't see what is in front of our face!

I've learned that all things evolve, even art!  Where I began in 1998 is not where I am today. It started as a means of dealing with grief and evolved into finding a new sense of self where I am free to create whatever is asking for a voice on any given day.  I've learned that I'm ok and I can still learn new things everyday.  I style is abstract and bold with an ever changing vocabulary of techniques. My art speaks of people, places and things that are important and I'm looking to incorporate my genealogy into the next phase of my art.

What are your thoughts about the rewards and experiences about painting with a group of artists?

motivation, comradery, constructive feedback, a place to go, support, and acceptance.

What have you learned about yourself through your art journey and/or what excites you about your process?I’ve learned to be patient, trust the process and be open to new ideas. I don’t really have a style and that can be problematic. I’m still searching.

I have been interested in drawing and painting from a young age.  I painted my first oil painting at 12 years. In my early 20’s I started painting classes and continued from there whenever the opportunity arose in small town Saskatchewan. I used the library to teach myself drawing and painting.

When I moved to Saskatoon there were more chances to take classes.  I started weekly classes and learned to figure out how to work on my own.  Then I joined the Saskatoon Painter’s Club where everyone works on their own on their project.  Advice is asked or not as desired.  Everyone is willing to help and you can pick up new techniques. I also do pleine air painting.

When I retired I decided I could dedicate myself to my art. I now have a studio and usually paint or draw daily. I am doing life drawing weekly and occasional long pose as I try to improve my drawing skills.  I like all of the mediums and like the challenge of new techniques.

I have been interested in art my entire life. I am self taught and enjoy

working with acrylic paint and alcohol ink. My inspiration comes from nature and I enjoy putting colours to canvas creating natures wonders. Being an artist with Saskatoon Painters Club since 2008

has given me the opportunity to showcase my art. I enjoy painting with such a talented group of

artists gaining painting knowledge and friendships.

In the fall of 2019, I gathered up the nerve to join The Saskatoon Painters Club. I was so excited to participate and share my paintings in the October show. But, alas Covid hit and it was two years before I was in my first show. It was a highlight in my life.

The Painters in this Club are the most supportive, wonderfully talented people that I could ever hope to paint and socialize with. The advice, feedback and support we offer each other is priceless. My work has progressed and developed in ways that would not have been possible for me without this group.

I look forward to continuing to give back to the community through our many fundraising

Wednesdays have become a ritual for me.  Rain or shine, cold or colder...it is a day to touch base with my fellow artists and friends, share ideas, laugh, and leave responsibilities behind.  I am very fortunate to have been a member of the Saskatoon Painters Club for ten years now.  It is on this anniversary that causes me to pause and reflect on my time with the group.  My body of work has gradually become less frequent and smaller in size.  As with many artists from time to time, I am experiencing a dry spell. "Struggling" is a very present word in my vocabulary.  But I also realize that without the positive support and guidance of our group, I probably would have hung up my painting apron long ago.  So, as I try to find a pathway through my roadblocks, I am so grateful to continue with my art- no matter how small.  These days I am mainly painting watercolour cards and have included examples.  Some are Christmas, some seasonal, some travels, but all fun and original.

The rewards are being able to go out, and be creative with people that I love. I still look forward to seeing them, and painting while we visit.

I learned to just keep painting. It's Important to be connected with good people. It's important to get out, and have things to look forward to.

I have been painting with a group for over 20 years. Being part of two groups of interesting and serious artists helps me keep searching for new techniques and new ideas. The support provided by  fellow artists  is immeasurable and their comments help build my confidence to spread my wings down new and scary paths.

I’ve also figured out that I do my best work in the quiet of my studio, remembering the comments and help that the group has provided even when they don’t know they have said something that was enlightening to me.

The start of my art journey was taking a university painting class with Eli Bornstein- He told me "Don't put your brushes down'. This was a huge positive encouragement for me to keep painting.

Through out the later years I signed up for several workhops. I met the late Grace Boyle at the Brian Ateyo workshop. She encouraged me to join the Saskatoon Painters Club. Thanks to Grace I have been a member of the club for 23 years. The weekly painting gives me the opportunity to paint, support and share artistic knowledge with each other. Not only are we painters but we are a Family. Our club has created lifelong friendships. We are a diverse talented group of artists. As a club we donate, display and sell our paintings in various venues.

The essence of rny paintings is a blend of control and spontaneity. My motivation comes from my love of nature. I have been rewarded with receiving commissions. The underlying joy that guides my painting process is to take the viewer into the painting and see their connection and excitement.

I love belonging to Saskatoon Painter's club.  Besides having fun painting together,  we get inspiration and encouragement from each other to create our art.  We also learn from each other.

I feel more confident to try new techniques, art mediums through workshops etc. and step out of my comfort zone.  I am excited by this and have grown a lot on my art journey!

For me,creating art is an adventure, there is always something new to discover.

As a self-made artist, I like to challenge myself. Being in an artists group is essential for me. We exchange ideas, techniques, give honest critique and advice. The friendships you make are priceless!

To quote Vincent Van Gogh:

"I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it "

Most of all, it's having fun and enjoying the journey!

I enjoy the experience of painting with the Saskatoon Painters Club because of the exchange of ideas.  We give each other encouragement  and positive feedback.

The comradery is amazing and we are happy to learn from each other.

I started art classes as a prelude to retirement.  I have learned that I love painting and playing with color.  Painting and creating collage, as an artistic expression, is a very freeing experience and a wonderful stress release (most of the time!).

I have recently re-entered the artworld after a long hiatus working and raising children.

Since joining Saskatoon Painter's Club, I have found motivation, received encouragement, and enjoyed the company of fellow artists. It is great to work alongside such a wonderfully talented group of people, many working in different mediums and skill levels, with varying education and experience. Although I came to the group with very little experience,  I have felt very welcomed and encouraged to try new things and expand my abilities. It has been extremely helpful to share experience, knowledge and enjoyment and I look forward to attending each week.
